TYPHIM Vi® – Salmonella typhi Vi Capsular Polysaccharide Vaccine Discuss with your healthcare professional whether this vaccine is appropriate for you. What is typhoid fever? Typhoid fever is a disease that is common in developing countries. It is an infectious disease spread through food and/or drink contaminated with the bacteria Salmonella typhi. Persons with typhoid fever usually have a sustained fever as high as 103°F - 104°F (39°C - 40°C). Symptoms can also include feelings of weakness, stomach pains, headache, or loss of appetite. In some cases, patients have a rash of flat, rose-coloured spots. The illness can be life-threatening. How is typhoid fever spread? You can get sick by consuming contaminated food and/or drink. How can I protect myself? Vaccination with TYPHIM Vi® reduces your risk of becoming ill with typhoid fever. You will receive a single intramuscular injection of 0.5 mL. To ensure an adequate immune response, you should be vaccinated at least 2 weeks prior to your departure. Immunization is an important measure in preventing typhoid fever, but it is not 100% protective. Travellers are advised to practice safe food and water precautions. Ask your healthcare professional about ways to protect yourself from exposure to diseases transmitted by consuming contaminated food and water. (This includes ice cubes and water used for personal hygiene, e.g., tooth brushing.) Are there any side effects? Serious side effects are rare. Some people who receive TYPHIM Vi® may have mild side effects such as pain or tenderness at the injection site, associated with redness and swelling. Other possible side effects commonly reported may include fever, headache, a general feeling of weakness and discomfort, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects usually go away within a few days. This is not a complete list of side effects. Your healthcare professional can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects that may occur after receiving TYPHIM Vi®. Will I ever need another TYPHIM Vi® vaccination? A repeat dose is recommended after 3 years if you plan to travel again to an area where the disease exists. Who should be vaccinated? Individuals 2 years and older travelling to a typhoid fever risk area, particularly when prolonged exposure is anticipated, should consider receiving TYPHIM Vi®. Who should not be vaccinated with TYPHIM Vi®? • Children under 2 years of age • Anyone with a known allergy to the vaccine or any of its components If you have any of the following conditions, talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist BEFORE you receive TYPHIM Vi®: • A high fever or serious illness • A weakened immune system, whether from disease or treatment • A bleeding disorder or taking blood thinning medications • Pregnant or breast-feeding women
• Fainting with a previous injection
